Fox Delta Antenna Analyzer

November 2012: My friend Gary , VE3ZGS in Carlton Place, sent me an email asking if I knew about this kit. So I checked out their web site http://products.foxdelta.com/aaz.htm, and said I have never heard of these guys but the kit sure looks interesting. Gary ended up buying 2 kits, one for himself and one for me. When the kits came in I got together with Gary at a downtown Ottawa watering hole and and I forked over some cash, about 64 dollars for the cost of the kit plus postage. I built the kit in a couple days and discovered that it worked as advertised. I will use this device in the field with my old ACER netbook computer.

This kit comes from India. No parts were missing (except for a couple screws maybe...), and all were in well labeled packages. All surface mount devices were pre-installed.

  • Componant side of board. The PCB ground top and bottom is separated between the PC side and the Bridge side. Mine were shorted but I was able to fix that quite quickly by scraping the small bit of copper that was not etched at the edge of the board. The grounds are reconnected by 4 ferrites and a capacitor.

  • View of board showing where I needed to scrape off some copper at the edge to ensure the right and left ground foils were separated (below and to the right of the number 2 in 0912). The instructions are very clear about the requirement to check this as well as every trace, because these boards are not inspected when they come from the factory.

  • Finished product being tested. In order to get the board in the box, you have to bend the BNC side of the box a little . Hmmm am I missing parts? The kit only came with 2 mounting spacers which should be installed at the USB side. The BNC installation holds up the left hand side of the board, So I think they intentionally left out the other two spacers and screws.

  • I attached the SWR analyzer to my PC and it was immediately discovered and driver was setup. I downloaded software provided by I2TZK which also discovered the device and I was ready to go. In this picture I am using an antenna tuner on a 44 foot dipole inverted Vee that is fed with window line. This SWR analyzer clearly shows the narrow 2:1 SWR bandwidth of my antenna tuner on 40 meters. When you move the mouse over the curve it provides a read of the frequency and SWR at that point of the curve. Very Nice!. When using it in generator mode (by clicking the tab) you get realtime SWR on a particular frequency so you can tune the antenna.
